I’ll get on my soap box again in the hopes of converting the few readers I have to a hidden diamond in the rough; I’ve made the claim on social media numerous times that despite how great and dynamic shows like Orange is the New Black and House of Cards, one show stands above as something that strikes every cord in this writers opinion. Netflix continues to put out season after season of programing that ranges from super hero drama to Marco Polo adventures in Asia. Yet with these gritty, vibrant and compelling shows only one has given me the satisfaction of laughter and tears, and that show my friends isn’t about politics or family bloodlines but a horse. A horse of course. That horses name happens to be Bojack.
Taking place in a fictional version of our world in which
animals walk, talk and have the same issues as we do, Bojack Horseman is the
story of a aging Hollywood actor struggling to stay relevant after years of
being on a Bob Saget like TV show have begun to fade away from the public eye. Voice
talent ranging from Daniel Radcliff, Arron Paul to Maria Bamford bring some of
the best writing together with talented actors/comedians. With a feline agent,
loser best friend and reluctant love interest, Bojack Horseman at first seems
like the same generic sitcom only with the freedom to curse and replace humans
with animals for quick puns but it breaks that mold by the first five episodes.
Its almost like when pitching the show they knew it needed to be basic to
satisfy the producers before taking it into the direction the originally set
out for in the beginning.
Alrighty enough horsing around, why should you take time away
from the Arrows and How to Get Away With Murders of the world; Bojack Horseman
is a show that combines some of the best comedy written with emotional
questions and situations that all of us have strugged with. Characters deal
with being in relationships out of the fear of being alone while others search
for something to make them happy while using drinking and sex to fill that
hole. I’ve done both of those things and I still break down and do those things
knowing that its not the fix: seeing someone, even a cartoon horse in the same
situation, makes me feel better about what issues I have. All of you have
stories similar and they are all covered in some way that will leave you glued
to the TV and reflecting.
Bojack Horseman is a beautiful dark comedy that brings tears, laughter and more heart then anything else put out on Netflix. Stick out the first five episodes of season one and once you'll end that first season craving more. Amazing writing, great caracters and so many gags that you may need to watch a second time around. I can not recomend this show enough for anyone who's struggled in love and life; nothing makes me feel better about my own life then seeing a cartoon horse voiced by Gob Bluth drinking to be happy and trying to figure out his life. Just like me.
